Description
2016 Piaggio MP3 500 ABS

Piaggio has produced more than 150,000 MP3s since this revolutionary three-wheeler was first unveiled in 2006. Thats an impressive number for this machine, which handles like a two-wheeler because of its leaning front end.

The success of the MP3 has varied dramatically from market to market. France is out front by a massive margin; some 50,000 are in use there. When I was in Paris for the press introduction of this latest MP3 500, I had to dodge flocks of very enthusiastic MP3 riders who fully exploit the superior safety margins of their vehicle and zap into any fast-running lane from a slower one, no prisoners taken.

When it comes to city commuting, the French are very practical. Theyd rather ride than drive to save time. And they do it year around, dry or wet, tarmac or cobblestones. And wet cobblestone challenges the stability of any two-wheeled vehicle much more than it does the Piaggio MP3. Thats why thousands of Parisians have chosen the MP3. This fact was noticed and Peugeot and Yamaha, which created similar models.

To counter the assaults, Piaggio keeps refining the model. In 2011, the company created the compact and lightweight Yourban version, but this new MP3 500 goes way beyond. Its a great leap forward, thanks foremost to the higher levels of active safety and dynamic dependability. As on the recently introduced Vespa GTS, the new MP3 500 has a new electronics suite centered on an advanced ABS/ASR package, plus its Piaggio Multimedia Platform turns your personal smartphone into digital instrumentation connected to the ECU via a USB connection.

The software is sophisticated, and PMP even provides readings for lean angle while the navigation system can help re-locate the vehicle lost in an overcrowded airport size parking lot. The ABS is a three-channel type, one sensor per wheel and now teamed with new, larger (258 millimeter vs. 240) brake rotors that were adopted in combination with new 13-inch wheels in place of the old 12s. This is responsible for an improvement in front-end feedback and steering response, though it must be noted that the 13s were first adopted on the Yourban. The new front wheels are shod with 110/70-13 tires, while at the rear the wheel and 140/70-14 tire remain unchanged.

As for style, the MP3 500 has been made to look more functional and neater. The whole front section is better coordinated, from the new lower grille to the LED headlights and much more effective windshield. And the larger and sportier front wheels play a significant role in making the new MP3 500 look more muscular. The rear was completely re-designed to look more dynamic and have extra space for a larger and more comfortable seat for two. Underseat cargo volume is also better, now adequate to store two full-face helmets.

This is a consequence of the radically redesigned rear section of the frame, which bumps torsional rigidity by 35 percent. The new MP3 500 retains the same basic measurements of the previous 400/500 cc model, with a 61-in. wheelbase and steering geometry that has been marginally altered. The new MP3 500 has 21.9 degrees of rake (+0.25 degrees) and 35.2mm of trail, to take advantage of the larger wheels.

The engine has been significantly upgraded as well. It now features a ride-by-wire throttle that interfaces with the traction control through a more powerful and advanced ECU that offers the possibility to easily select (just touch the starter button) an ECO mode that cuts fuel consumption and emissions. From a mechanical point of view, the liquid-cooled, 493cc sohc 4-valve/twin-spark single has remained unchanged apart from new roller-type cam followers and an optimized balance shaft. The engine now runs quieter and much smoother, with no perceived vibration, thanks to the balance shaft and better rubber mounts between the engine and the frame.

Peak power from the substantially oversquare (94.0mm x 71.0 mm) single remains unchanged at 40.1 hp at 7,250 rpm, with 34 pound-feet of torque at 5,250 RPM. The torque curve, though is better, theres enhanced throttle response and flexibility because of a larger airbox, a more efficient exhaust, and a longer inlet manifold with slightly smaller diameter that contributes to superior cylinder filling at lower rpm by inducing a stronger ram effect in the aspirated charge. An upgraded continuously variable transmission (CVT) helps the big single perform its very best.

At 570 pounds with a full tank, the new Piaggio MP3 500 ABS is a big mount, but in motion, even at walking pace, it feels very light and easy. The new seating position is very comfortable and offers ample space for adjustments. Controls are very accessible, including the hand brake leversleft for the rear, right for front. Hey, wait a minute! Whats that pedal on the right footboard for? That actuates the linked braking system, car style. Its mandatory if Piaggio want the vehicle to be homologated for use by people holding a car license only.

For extra safety, the MP3 500 ABS brake pedal operates a completely independent circuit for totally failsafe functionality. The pedal forces the right foot to be positioned rearward of the left one, and it takes a solid stomping on it to obtain the same level of deceleration delivered by squeezing both hand levers with medium force. I was told that this was to prevent the inexperienced car driver from locking wheels in panic stops if he chose to buy the MP3 500 without ABS.

On the cobblestone streets of Paris, the MP3 500 ABS provided a reassuring feel, even when leaning into corners on poor surfaces. The engine is highly responsive, torquey, very smooth, and very quiet. This scooter can beat just about any car away from a light, and the engine keeps progressing without hesitation until 90 mph, where the new, larger windshield provides excellent comfort.

Piaggios new MP3 500 ABS is an agile and safe urban commuter that also has the solid pace and comfort of a long-distance GT scooter. Safety is at levels unknown because of those tilting front wheels, and its further improved now with the addition of ABS and traction control. Whats more, the ECO mode cuts fuel consumption by a claimed 15 percent, which makes the new 500 more efficient than the discontinued 400. With a long list of options that includes heated grips, the new MP3 500 ABS is an excellent year-round ride, comfortable and safe even in rainy and cold Milan. Look for the Piaggio MP3 500 ABS to come to the US as a 2015 model.
